Me , myself and Ferrets

By LizzyBoo

Let me be honest with you, a few years ago I did not even know what ferrets were. I had never seen one or in fact even heard of them and of course I didnt know what a ferret even looked like.

I remember my first experience with ferrets. I was travelling by train from work pretty bored as I know the journey by train well. I remeber a lady sitting on a front of me. She had on her lap a creature so lovely, so fluffy and cute and I was bessoted with the little creature. Speaking to the lady i discovered that this wonderful little animal on her knee was a Ferret. The lady was so kind and even let me hold her ferret. The feret was calm and nice. She was used to being handled and did not bite at all. The ferret was about 3 years old. The lady carried her in a pocket of her jumper. She did not even have a cage as the ferret was so nice and calm.

When I arrived home I started to hunt out  all the information that I could find about ferrets  available on internet. I found many care sheets and inspiring information about them. It took me another 3 months before I started searching for my ferret.

Then I was contacted by a lady who offered me a male ferret 11 weeks old. Some information about him.

Colour- Sable/ Bay points/ medium-standart

Old – 11 weeks

Sex – Male

She also sent me a picture of him, so I was pretty sure I wanted him.

After 2 weeks I recieved another phone call from the same lady. She was asking me If I could give a home another ferret. She explained me it is a brother of the ferret I bought from her. She was crying on the phone as she just brought him back from a people who did not treat him well. He was biting and the people fed him with alcohol and with food not suitable for ferrets. After a really long time considering I decided to take him as well.

To take another ferret home was a difficult decision as my first one-was biting so well and my hands were bloody most of the time.

Colour – Sable/ Medium silver with mitts

Old – the same as my first ferret

Sex- male

When I brought him home, he was very aggresive. He was not just aggresive to me but sometime to my first ferret as well.

Ferrets are fun!
Ferrets are fun!

I had to keep them separatelly until they reached sexual maturity and I was able to castrate them. After castration they become friends after all and I was able to put them together. My sleepless and hopeless nights ended.

After a year and half I got bored. Everyone who has male ferret castrated knows what I mean.

My boys become so lazy, always sleeping on me. They played so little even they were able to be out of cage most of the day.

Then I started to think of a new ferret. For change about female. I already had many friends among ferrets so it was not difficult. I adopted a female ferret from an animal care centre.

She was thrown on a street by her owners and thanks to good people who took her into the animal care center. She was so skinny and small. Female ferrets are much smaller than adult boys.

Colour – Black sable/ Bay points/Standart

Age – around 2 years

Sex female

When I brought her home I enjoyed  my ferrets so much. She was so fast and playfull. She become a best friend to my boys and they made such a mess together.  I felt so happy but was still not satisfied yet.

I dreamed of a champagne coloured female ferret to make my group complete. Finally my dream came trough and my dearest friend brought me a champagne ferret home.

Colour – Champagne/ Siamese point(fine point), dark

Old – 9 weeks at the time I got her.

Sex – female

Ferrets are cute
Ferrets are cute

All my ferrets are registered in a ferret club. It means all of them have a certificate with a familly tree. All of them also have a microchip behind their neck in case they run away from me.

There are many ferrets left alone in animal care as the people who bought them as a pet, were not informed well.

A Ferret is not a toy but a beautifull animal. I am preparing a series of articles about ferrets, as I still feel it is so important for people to know as much as possible about them before they even consider buying one as a pet.

My series will be all about ferrets and my experiences, so watch out for a new articles from me!

Ferrets kill mice

Read olso following articles.

Ferret’s introduction – part 1/Social behaviour -It is my second article about ferrets focused on their behaviour.

Ferret's introduction - part 2/Adolescence of ferrets - What it's like when ferret gets into puberty?

Ferret's introduction - part3/Where to buy them? - All about buying ferret as a pet!

Very cute article! Your ferrets are beautiful. I once had a couple of cockatiels (who would NOT mix well with a ferret, ha), and they would sometimes bite and draw blood too, but a ferret bite probably is more uncomfortable. Once I got my female schnauzer, I had to find new homes for my cockatiels. My little schnauzer has a high prey drive toward birds.

I like ferrets. I never kept them as pets as such but as 'ratters' working in conjunction with dogs. I admit it though, I became very attached and spent sleepless nights when one never appeared from a hole. They always did though, sometimes a week later. Thank you for the hub Lizzy.

Thank you Grace, I know what you mean. I olso have birds at home. I have 2 Rosella and 5 Budgies. It is all about to keep tham safe and away from hunters. I keep them in separate room.

Ferrets would olso eat my lizards so I have just one rule. Upstairs I have birds and lizards in a shut rooms. Downstairs I have ferrets and that works.

Amazing Grace- thank you for your information and comment.

Hello Carmen, so good to see you around. I also love my ferrets. They might smell but it's nothing to compare some of my colleges at work.

What I like about my ferrets is their personality. They are always happy to see me and have the finest coat. Even they are very energic animals, always bring a peace to my soul.

Thank you very much for your comment. Lizzy

I miss seeing you around HubPages. I hope you are doing well. I sent you an email. (I don't mean to add all this personal stuff on your Hub...)

So... Great Hub!

Marissa-is your male ferret castrated? Sometimes people without knowlidge castrate their ferrets very soon, especially when they are not sexually completed. Therefor sometimes if they castrate male ferret very soon it also stop his growing and he remains small. Females are smaller, lot smaller then males and always.

My males are not the biggest in a world but sometimes help if you feed them with meat. I am giving my ferrets meet 3-4 times a week. They are hunters and need meet. Many granulated food is not suitable for them. I am using all their life ProPlan for Kitten, for the simple fact that it contains the highest persentage of meat in it. More likely-granulated food NEVER gives ferrets what they get from meat. I am using beef as it is the most suitable for them.

Sometimes the growing problem can be caused by vacination, I mean not every vacine is suitable for ferrets. Many people still things that ferrets are like humsters, but that is not correct.

So in total My ferrets eating ProPlan for kitten and 3-4 times a week beef. Meat must be fresh and pure not from cans please. I know you want probably like it but I also giving my ferrets laboratory mice as it is good for their digestive system if it contains skin, hair, blood etc. When I think of my ferrets always thinking they comming from nature and they normally hunted their pray so they really need meat! I am not giving my ferrets many products mmade for ferrets as the quality is not always the best for ferrets. You can even email me pictures of yours if you wish. I will be soo happy.

Marrisa-go on my profile page and there is an option to contact me. Just write hello and when I get your mail I will write you from my personal email.

I am glad I could give you some ideas. If he was neutered in 4 months age, then he will not grow. As if he is not sexually complete and neutered too early-the hormones cannot develope all the proceses they should and castration cuts them off.

LizzyBoo. Hi. What a wonderful story. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

You obviously love your pet Ferrets and they sound like they would make wonderful pets.

The photographs are beautiful.

Thank you for sharing them with us. :) :)

Oliversmum-thank you so much for your words. It means a lot to me. Yes I love my ferrets, many people thinks all they do is just biting and being bad. I have ferrets for a few years and is always about How you treat them. As How you treat them will affect How they will treat you.

Thank you

Hey Lizzy i remember you saying something about feeding your ferret mice? Now how do you do that exactly and are they alive or dead already and since i never fed my ferrets mice before will they know what to do?? And what are the benifets of doing this and are there any cons to feeding your ferret mice? Thanks and hope to hear from you soon

-Marissa

LizzyBoo Hub Author 21 months ago

Marissa I do feed my ferrets with mice. Not everyday but once a week at least. As I sad Ferrets are hunters. They will not bother with a death mouse. As a hunters they would prefer to catch mouse by themself. The mouse does not suffer. One bite by ferret and mouse is killed. I am using my own mice. As I have snakes and lizards I have my own mice to feed them with. Some people might think I am bad, but hey-we human also eat meat which was alive once!

I am feeding well the mice when they grow to give a good nutrition pottential to my ferrets. Giving ferrets a mouse has a simple aspect- Mouse contains meat and blood, skinn, hair, bonnes. This all is helpfull for ferret's digestive system. Especially the hair and skin is like brush which cleans ferrets inside a bit from a previous feeding. Ferret is not humster, ferret needs meat more then vegetable or dry food which not containes enough meet.

I am not eating much meat myself but ferrets should eat at least 3 times a week. My ferrets et 3 times a week a beef meat/ especially beef hearts/ as they are cheap. Beef meat is consider to be the best for ferrets. Then once in a whille I give them mouse, not death one but alive. Dry food they have only as a supplement of their feeding. Dry food is not the mayor part of their feeding.

If your ferrets eat meat also helps them to grow better and are bigger then ferrets on a dry food.

I do not cook the meat, never give them a cooked meat. Rough meat it has to be without any additional spice and such. Just buy a meat, wash it and cut it.

I felt compelled to write a Hub about ferrets the other day but I couldn't seem to decide on exactly what. I though of just writing a personal story about my ferret but I ended up doing nothing.

... this comment is just an excuse to say "Hi!" :)
