Me , myself and Ferrets
82Let me be honest with you, a few years ago I did not even know what ferrets were. I had never seen one or in fact even heard of them and of course I didnt know what a ferret even looked like.
I remember my first experience with ferrets. I was travelling by train from work pretty bored as I know the journey by train well. I remeber a lady sitting on a front of me. She had on her lap a creature so lovely, so fluffy and cute and I was bessoted with the little creature. Speaking to the lady i discovered that this wonderful little animal on her knee was a Ferret. The lady was so kind and even let me hold her ferret. The feret was calm and nice. She was used to being handled and did not bite at all. The ferret was about 3 years old. The lady carried her in a pocket of her jumper. She did not even have a cage as the ferret was so nice and calm.
When I arrived home I started to hunt out all the information that I could find about ferrets available on internet. I found many care sheets and inspiring information about them. It took me another 3 months before I started searching for my ferret.
Then I was contacted by a lady who offered me a male ferret 11 weeks old. Some information about him.
Colour- Sable/ Bay points/ medium-standart
Old – 11 weeks
Sex – Male
She also sent me a picture of him, so I was pretty sure I wanted him.
After 2 weeks I recieved another phone call from the same lady. She was asking me If I could give a home another ferret. She explained me it is a brother of the ferret I bought from her. She was crying on the phone as she just brought him back from a people who did not treat him well. He was biting and the people fed him with alcohol and with food not suitable for ferrets. After a really long time considering I decided to take him as well.
To take another ferret home was a difficult decision as my first one-was biting so well and my hands were bloody most of the time.
Colour – Sable/ Medium silver with mitts
Old – the same as my first ferret
Sex- male
When I brought him home, he was very aggresive. He was not just aggresive to me but sometime to my first ferret as well.
I had to keep them separatelly until they reached sexual maturity and I was able to castrate them. After castration they become friends after all and I was able to put them together. My sleepless and hopeless nights ended.
After a year and half I got bored. Everyone who has male ferret castrated knows what I mean.
My boys become so lazy, always sleeping on me. They played so little even they were able to be out of cage most of the day.
Then I started to think of a new ferret. For change about female. I already had many friends among ferrets so it was not difficult. I adopted a female ferret from an animal care centre.
She was thrown on a street by her owners and thanks to good people who took her into the animal care center. She was so skinny and small. Female ferrets are much smaller than adult boys.
Colour – Black sable/ Bay points/Standart
Age – around 2 years
Sex female
When I brought her home I enjoyed my ferrets so much. She was so fast and playfull. She become a best friend to my boys and they made such a mess together. I felt so happy but was still not satisfied yet.
I dreamed of a champagne coloured female ferret to make my group complete. Finally my dream came trough and my dearest friend brought me a champagne ferret home.
Colour – Champagne/ Siamese point(fine point), dark
Old – 9 weeks at the time I got her.
Sex – female
All my ferrets are registered in a ferret club. It means all of them have a certificate with a familly tree. All of them also have a microchip behind their neck in case they run away from me.
There are many ferrets left alone in animal care as the people who bought them as a pet, were not informed well.
A Ferret is not a toy but a beautifull animal. I am preparing a series of articles about ferrets, as I still feel it is so important for people to know as much as possible about them before they even consider buying one as a pet.
My series will be all about ferrets and my experiences, so watch out for a new articles from me!

I like ferrets. I never kept them as pets as such but as 'ratters' working in conjunction with dogs. I admit it though, I became very attached and spent sleepless nights when one never appeared from a hole. They always did though, sometimes a week later. Thank you for the hub Lizzy.
Sounds like I need to get rid of my cats and get me some ferrets, the cats are lazy and undisciplined. That's it they are fired!

I love ferrets! They're so fun. I gave mine up when I started High School becuse I never had time for her and she was unhappy. It was a hard decision but I knew ahe would be happier with a family who had time to spare. I enjoyed this article.

LizzyBoo. Hi. What a wonderful story. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
You obviously love your pet Ferrets and they sound like they would make wonderful pets.
The photographs are beautiful.
Thank you for sharing them with us. :) :)
Hey Lizzy i remember you saying something about feeding your ferret mice? Now how do you do that exactly and are they alive or dead already and since i never fed my ferrets mice before will they know what to do?? And what are the benifets of doing this and are there any cons to feeding your ferret mice? Thanks and hope to hear from you soon

I felt compelled to write a Hub about ferrets the other day but I couldn't seem to decide on exactly what. I though of just writing a personal story about my ferret but I ended up doing nothing.
... this comment is just an excuse to say "Hi!" :)
I'm glad you can relate. I'm happy to see you on HubPages again. This is how I 'spy' on you. hehe.
Okay, I will check it now.
Thank you again Lizzy your really informing me on how to keep my lil fuzzies healthy and now anthor thing now when you feed your ferrets the mice do you do it in a cage or in the bathtub beacause ive seen alot of videos of it being done in the tub...Now why is that or should i just let the ferrets have free range in there cage while they eat it thanks again
-Marissa
PS sorry if i bug you alot about this stuff
These guys are so awesome. The first time I was a ferret was in that movie Kindergarden Cop haha. Thanks for the hub.
I have seen ferrets in the pet stores quite often, they must be fairly popular as pets. They look adorable too. Thanks for sharing, love the pics...

Very cute article! Your ferrets are beautiful. I once had a couple of cockatiels (who would NOT mix well with a ferret, ha), and they would sometimes bite and draw blood too, but a ferret bite probably is more uncomfortable. Once I got my female schnauzer, I had to find new homes for my cockatiels. My little schnauzer has a high prey drive toward birds.
