A few days ago I wrote an article about Depression and I have decided to focus on this subject more. I have decided to create a series about this subject to put as much info as I could into it. Many people think that depression is a sickness of lazy people or for people who do not want to work so they visit a doctor to get off from work for a while.

A sad story

Last night I was searching on internet for my ideas and I found a story which touched me and basically made me to continue in writing about depression. So back to the story I am on about.

It happened in CzechRepublic few years ago. A mother 57 years old lived with her children and husband happily.  Then the father of the children died and left his wife with 2 teenagers behind.

The story is told by the daughter so I will speak as her. Let’s call her Lizzy.

After my father died a lot things have changed. Mum was not happy at all. Well, she was doing everything as usual but me and my brother we could see the change of her attitude. Mum was always sad, sometimes I came from school and she was sitting on a floor and crying. She did not care of her appearance at all. She was doing only the necessary to provide us with food and clothes.

Over few months the situation got worst and my mum was sent to the hospital for a medical treatment of her sadness. After 2 weeks she committed suicide in the hospital.

I was left with my brother. We both were over eighteen so we did not have to go to foster’s house etc. My brother left soon after my mother’s death. I got married and have a beautiful daughter. It was a Christmas when the police came into our house with announcement of a death of my brother. It left me devastated. I cried a lot.

Few month later I found myself in a same spot as my mother was. I was thinking in a negative way. I was angry at my daughter and my husband. I used to lock myself in the bathroom for hours just to cry my eyes out. One day my husband took me to the hospital and I was diagnosed with a heavy stage of depression. The doctor was kind and nice to me and chose the best therapy for me. It took me 7 months to get well…………

As everyone can see, depression can also kill. Depression makes those people hopeless. Therefore I wish to know the reasons why.

Congenital factors

It is not proven yet but tests show that in some families depression is more common among members of the family.

Sex

Females suffer lot more from depression than males. It is for a simple fact of hormones. Women can fall into depression after giving a birth or when menopause comes. Women are also more sensitive and emotional.

Development in Childhood

People who suffer from pain in childhood can end up in depression when they grow up. Most common factors are: death of a family member, divorce of parents, child abuse, bully at school, depressive parents. Children absorb everything around them so if they grow in bad family conditions it can be affect their life.

Life stress situation

Throughout life we get into situations which may cause depression. Losing a partner, being unemployed, a bully at work, a bad manager. This all can put us down to make us feel out of luck and low in confidence. That is where our negative emotions start.

Psychological factors

People with a low confidence are mostly negative about their future. People who cannot socialize well with others. People who cannot cope with the daily problems. They cannot stand criticism from others. They get upset fast and easy.

Health

People who are seriously sick and have to take pills can easily fall into depression. Pills have many negative side effects and chemicals. Taking pills for a long time can tire us down and create a great basement for a depression. People who suffer from cancer, HIV, and other very aggressive illnesses may fall into deep depression. Sickness always calls up hopeless thoughts in our mind. Sickness always makes us feel unimportant, unwanted, disabled.

Alcohol and drugs

People who drink and take drugs can get depressed s well. First of all they will lose friends, jobs, maybe family and secondly they get lonely and the world will seem hopeless to them. Addiction to drugs or alcohol is hard to get rid of so during the recovery comes depression.

Alcohol and drugs are not good for depression.
Alcohol and drugs are not good for depression.

Depression is all around us. All we can do is to face it. The most important key is to avoid stressful situation and keep our mood up. I will talk more closely about things which can mood us up in one of my next articles.

Along with depression goes self-harming. I have written and article Where my sister is hurting herself to feel better. Thanks to her I know that depression is not easy to get over without medical help.

Yes I agree to. It is very sad how it affected the whole family, suicide is such an awful thing to happen to anyone. If only they could seek medical/mental assistance, there is so much loss, what a waste. I also look forward to reading your upcoming hubs on depression, I have a bout of it now and then myself, but not serious enough yet for me to seek help. I monitor it very carefully. Peace my friend, excellent hub and I rate it UP.

Hi Lizzy,

The type of depression you are talking about here is situational, (relates to sad events in someone's life), but at times the cause can be a hormonal imbalance, which is my personal case and only medication can help this condition (plus Vit B12 as I told you before).

I am happy you are writing agian (just read your poem) and I think it is a great way to keep yourself focused on the positive and creative side of life, so keep doing it. Hugs, Petra

This is a well-written writing about depression. Short and sweet. That’s it. Nothing less nothing more. I’m sharing this with all my friends. Somebody once said ‘Only the insane commit suicide’. In fact depression causes insanity – in deep depression we have no hope and see death as the only outcomes. Scary! I will never again allow myself to get so depressed again. I’ve learned to fear that horrible negative thoughts. Thank God for anti-depressants! You are in my prayers.

Dear Martie,

thank you very much for your lovely comment. I am not feeling that bad anymore. I even made another depression hub today. It is about How to stay positive. So I think the part number 3 will be positive and I will publish it tonight. Thank you dearly for your nice thought you shared here. Thank you very much Martie

I've seen it first hand as well as some other mental disorders that I'm never sure came first or did the depression? Hard to understand why some people have a harder time than others overcoming it but SEEING it for what it is ends up being the key I think.

You have the right idea though - staying positive and trying to as the say goes "take it one day at a time" - it applies in so many life struggles. I know for me, I never take for granted one moment of happiness because I have seen things turn on a dime. I think that's why I put on my granny rose-colored glasses and keep on trucking, putting one foot in front of the other and try to tell myself 'not today - I have things to do'.

Good job on bringing this devastating problem to everyone's attention though!
